Professional prospects: the French major of the School of Foreign Languages is the most important French talent training base in Shenzhen. The Pearl River Delta region has close exchanges with French-speaking countries and regions in terms of economy, trade, culture, science and technology. Training objectives: to cultivate all-round and innovative French professionals with high humanistic standards, rich knowledge of French language, literature and culture, with deep understanding of the general situation of French-speaking countries and regions, and solid comprehensive skills in French listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation.
Knowledge objectives: To master French phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, discourse, rhetoric and other aspects of the language; be familiar with the socio-linguistic phenomena with special cultural connotations, understand the basic theories and methods of language research; be familiar with the development of the history of French literature and important writers’ works; understand the basic theories and methodology of literary criticism; be familiar with the social culture of major French-speaking countries, and the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western cultures.
Ability training: this major cultivates all-round French professionals with a rich knowledge of French language, literature and culture, solid French language abilities and high comprehensive humanistic standards, and can engage in related work in foreign affairs, foreign trade, translation, education, research, management and other foreign-related fields.
Main courses: Comprehensive French, French Listening, Oral French, French Writing, French-to-Chinese Translation, French-Chinese Interpreting, French Reading, French Literature, French Society and Culture, etc.
Training features:
Closely relying on the professional development and practical advantages of the School of Foreign Languages, we should make full use of the resources, strengthen the discipline construction, adjust the Major setting, promote the construction of the faculties, and innovate the talent training mode.
(1) Paying attention to integrating theory with practice. We adhere to the combination of teaching and practice. We emphasize both the basic and applied skills, and advocate for interdisciplinary and comprehensive teaching.
(2) Reforming the teaching mode of specialized courses.We mainly focus on classroom teaching, supplemented by laboratory teaching and practice such as through the multimedia learning center, the satellite foreign language digital teaching video center, simultaneous interpreting and other laboratory teaching and practice. All French teachers have the experience of studying abroad, visiting and studying in France. The majority of professional teachers have doctoral degrees, and their research fields cover literature, linguistics, translation, culture, etc.
(3) Paying attention to the combination of school teaching and social practice. We have signed internship agreements with Shenzhen Nanfeng social work service agency, Shenzhen Shekou overseas personnel service center, Nanshan International Exchange Center, and Shenzhen ROA Business Service Co., Ltd., so as to cultivate students’ creative thinking and comprehensive application abilities, and comprehensively improve students’ quality. We actively respond to the French-related Foreign affairs activities in Shenzhen by recommending students to participate in foreign affairs practice activities.
(4) Vigorously promoting international exchanges. The French major has outstanding foreign exchange programs, and exchanges students with the Paris Institute of Arts and Culture Management (half a year), Aix-en-Provence Institute of Political Studies (half a year), La Rochelle University (one year), Quebec University (one year) and Montreal University (one year).
