Professional Prospects: The School of Foreign Languages is the most important training base for foreign language talents in Shenzhen, and the Japanese major provides the only output in the area of inter-disciplinary talents on Japanese. Japan is our country’s most important trading partner in East Asia. With the development of Sino-Japanese economical, trade and cultural exchanges, an increasing number of Japanese enterprises, institutions and cultural agencies are entering China, which requires a large number of talents specializing in Japanese, and deepens the needs for such talents in domestic government agencies, enterprises, the tourism industry, educational and cultural institutions. At the same time, together with the “Japanese plus” concept, employment prospects are better when the Japanese major is combined with other majors through minor or double degree during undergraduate studies, and such students have the opportunity to excel in the fields of IT, trade, education, design, tourism, welfare, etc.
Employment direction: translation, interpreting, commerce, education, banking, foreign affairs, culture and other industries.
Employment institutions: Japanese major graduates are mainly active in various Japanese-funded enterprises, trading companies, banks, governmental departments, and cultural institutions in Shenzhen and Guangdong Province.
Training objectives: to cultivate talents with comprehensive capabilities and high ethical standards; to train talents with Japanese listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills; to cultivate talents with sufficient knowledge of Japanese language, literature and culture; to train talents with social competitiveness, innovation and international vision.
Knowledge objectives: To master the Japanese language and cultural knowledge, Japanese national conditions, Japanese literature and important works and writers, Japanese history and social characteristics, and Japanese etiquettes; to learn about the basic knowledge of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences to form an inter-disciplinary knowledge structure.
Ability training: to have the ability to use the Japanese language, to be able to carry out literary appreciation, cross-cultural communication, critical thinking and innovation, to have research ability, independent learning ability and practical abilities.
Main courses: Basic Japanese and Application, Intermediate Japanese and Application, Advanced Japanese, Listening, Conversation, Applied Writing, Interpreting, Translation, Overview of Japan, Japanese Literature and Culture, Japanese History, Business Japanese, Japanese Reading Comprehension, etc.
Training features:
(1) Focusing on the combination of practical skills and humanities. While cultivating students’ basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, we take advantage of the diversified research directions of teachers, combine teaching and research, and offer core courses such as “Introduction to Japanese Literature and Culture”, “History of Japan”, “History of Japanese Ideology”, etc. and innovative short courses to achieve a balance of skills and knowledge;
(2) Emphasizing the cultivation of inter-disciplinary talents with international perspectives; we have set up Japanese-English bilingual classes, and formulated a customized training plan; we have replaced university English courses with professional courses based on English skills, supplemented by English literature and culture courses, so that when students learn new languages, they can also improve their English proficiency, build a vision of Eastern and Western culture, and cultivate true multilingual talents;
(3) Focusing on the cultivation of students' academic thinking.We have built a "Research Center on East Asia", promoting teaching by research. We have vigorously built up collections of books and documents, and regularly hold reading clubs and lectures, to establish basic academic thinking and raise research awareness;
(4) Exploring multiple international communication channels. We have established exchange partnerships with Osaka University, Meiji University, Ritsumeikan University, Oita University, Kanagawa University, Osaka City University, Kumamoto Gakuen University and many other well-known Japanese universities; we have also established the “2+2” model of dual degree on dual campuses with Sapporo University. We have established a training base for postgraduate entrance examination in Kyushu Foreign Language School in Japan to provide training and channels for students to apply for postgraduate studies in Japan.
