School of Foreign Languages November, 2019
On November 10, 2019, the 9th Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest of South China Division was held at the CUHK (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Shenzhen. 48 contestants from colleges in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Hainan provinces participated in the one-day competition. Under the guidance of Professor Zhang Jiliang, two students, Yang Shiqi and Lai Jiaying, who are in the Advanced Interpretation Experimental Class of the School of Foreign Languages of our university, participated in the competition and got excellent results.
After two rounds of fierce competition, Yang Shiqi came in third by her skilled consecutive interpretation and she was awarded the first prize in the contest of South China Division, and Lai Jiaying also got a prize. In December this year, Yang Shiqi together with the other three winners (the first and the second are from CUHK, Shenzhen and the fourth is from Xiamen University) will represent the South China Division to participate in the Contest of Chinese Mainland Division in Beijing.
The participants in this competition are all from Project 211 and 985 in four provinces. Most of them are graduate students majoring in interpretation of MTI (Master of Translation And Interpreting). It wasn’t easy for the SZU, a local university, to get such good grades this year when it was first invited to send undergraduates to participate in the contest. Here we extend our congratulations to Yang Shiqi and Lai Jiaying for winning the honor for our Shenzhen University.
The Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest is sponsored by Xiamen University, with the wide participation of universities and the significant influence on both sides of the strait. Since the first contest was successfully held in 2009, it has been held for eight times in a row, which has attracted the close attention of mainstream media including CCTV and Taiwan ETTV, and has successively received support from the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and the Ministry of Education for major projects, which has come to be a national brand contest.
