Her research interests span from Cognitive-Functional Linguistics, Interactional Linguistics with an empirical, usage-based approach to grammatical structure and grammaticalization, to Contrastive Linguistics and Conversation Analysis. She has published a series of research articles on the interrogative grammar and questions in Chinese in journals including Journal of Chinese Language and Computing, Chinese Language and Discourse, etc. In recent years she has applied the approach of Interactional Linguistics to the study of grammaticalization of discourse markers in Chinese.
Dr. Gao has been teaching core courses to English major undergraduates including Comprehensive English (1-4), Introduction to Linguistics, Basics of Lexicology, and elective courses to postgrads including Cognitive Semantics, Interactional Linguistics and Advanced Lexicology.
