Lecture by Prof. Theo D'haen on The Road to Literature
On April 27th, Theo D’haen, Professor Emeritus of Leuven University and Changjiang distinguished and chair professor of Sichuan University, came to our university and gave a lecture entitled The Road to Literature in the Lecture Hall, the South Library at 2:30pm.
Professor Theo D’haen received a warm welcome after a brief self-introduction and the main content of the lecture. During the lecture, Professor Theo D’haen pointed out that literature is a special kind of ideology and aesthetic response to social life. Literature presents a notable aesthetic character, which is the fundamental difference between literature as a language art and other social ideologies such as philosophy. Moreover, modern and contemporary literature has made creations not only in literary genres, such as establishing the genres of modern drama, poetry, modern fiction, essays, prose and reportage, but also in narrative point of view, way of expressing emotions and techniques of portraying and structure composing. These creations, with the characteristics of modernization, made literature a modern one in a real sense. Professor Theo D’haen patiently responded to the questions put forward by the attendees, both students and teachers, at the end.
Through this lecture, students gained a deep understanding of the richness of literature and the development of literature and its significance. There will be an increase in the interest of reading literary theory books and a constant improve in students’ own literary appreciation after this lecture.
