Lecture by Prof. Jiang Xiaohua on The Source of Lu Xun's Idea of Literal Translation
At 2:00 p.m. on June 20, Professor Jiang Xiaohua, Professor of Macao Institute of Technology, chairman of Macao Federation of translators and vice president of Asia Pacific international exchange English Research Association, visited our school and gave a wonderful lecture entitled "The Source of Lu Xun's Idea of Literal Translation" in Conference Room 1200 of the liberal arts building. The lecture was attended by Professor Zhang Xiaohong, associate dean of the School of Foreign Languages, and Professor Wang Hui, Professor Li Xiaojun, Associate Professor Tang Lixin, and postgraduates of grade 2015 and 2016.
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Wang Hui made a brief introduction to Professor Jiang Xiaohua, and the students warmly welcomed Professor Jiang's arrival. Then Professor Jiang Xiaohua made a brief introduction to the main contents of the lecture. First of all, Professor Jiang Xiaohua proposed the change of Lu Xun's early translation style from 1903 to 1908: Adapted translation / Literal translation - Translation - Free translation - Literal translation. Lu Xun's translation criteria are easy to understand, elegant (mild expression), trustworthy but not smooth (precise expression). Secondly, Professor Jiang Xiaohua points out that the source of Lu Xun's idea of literal translation is influenced by Buddhist thoughts, serious defects in free translation, Orientalism, the transformation of Japanese national character by Kitagawa Baicun, a Japanese critic, and the influence of some existing faithful translation works. Finally, the students and the teachers present gave wonderful questions to Professor Jiang Xiaohua's lecture, and Professor Jiang Xiaohua patiently answered them.
Through this lecture, students not only understand the translation theory related to Lu Xun, but also have a deep understanding of the origin of Lu Xun's idea of literal translation. It is believed that after the lecture, students will increase their reading of Lu Xun's translation theory books, learn Lu Xun's strengths in translation, and improve their translation ability.
