Lecture by Prof. Sun Yifeng onTranslation, Mapping and Connectivity
At 2:00 p.m. on June 20, Professor Sun Yifeng, vice chairman of IATIS, director of the Chinese Translation Association, member of FRSA, director of the Department of translation, Lingnan University of Hong Kong and honorary director of the Institute of foreign languages and literature of Jinan University, visited our school and conducted a speech entitled "Translation, Mapping and Connectivity" in office 1200 of the liberal arts building. Professor Zhang Xiaohong, vice president of the school of foreign languages of Shenzhen University, and Professor Wang Hui, Professor Li Xiaojun, and postgraduates of grades 2015 and 2016 of the school of foreign languages attended the lecture.
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Wang Hui made a brief introduction to Professor Sun Yifeng, and the students warmly welcomed him. Then Professor Sun Yifeng introduced the main contents of the lecture in English. First of all, Professor Sun Yifeng put forward a series of famous translation theories, for example, “Translation is impossible but necessary; A bad translation is reductive and lacking in nuance in the sense that it merely conveys the basic information of the original, which is deemed ‘inessential’”. Secondly, he puts forward the task of translators “A real translation is transparent, it does not cover the original, does not block its light, but allows the pure language, as though reinforced by its own medium, to shine upon the original all the more fully”. Finally, the students and the teachers present raised wonderful questions to Professor Sun Yifeng's lecture, and Professor Sun Yifeng patiently answered their questions.
Through this lecture, the students not only understand some important translation theories, but also have a deep understanding of the translator's tasks and precautions. It is believed that after this lecture, students will increase their reading of translation theory books, constantly learn from excellent translation works, learn from excellent translators' translation experience, and pay attention to the combination of knowledge and skills.
