Lecture by Dr. Yao Wong on Old Tradition, New Tradition and Cultural Reality
At 10:00 on December 1, 2017, the 1200 Conference Room on the second floor of the Office area at Wenke Building welcomed a meaningful seminar hosted by the School of Foreign Languages. The keynote speaker of this lecture was Dr. Wang Yao. Dr. Yao is the Distinguished Professor of Chang Jiang Scholar, Minister of Education, and the Director of the Academic Committee of Soochow University. Modest and amiable, he is mainly engaged in the study of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. The lecture was conducted in a relaxed atmosphere in which the students were deeply guided and inspired by the discussion on old and new traditions and cultural realities.
This lecture was mainly divided into three modules. The first one was about the discussion of cultural reality. Dr. Wang Yao pointed out the importance of "seeing China in the world", advocated dialogue with the world and learning from the West and analyzed the problem of China's cultural transformation. The second module was about the discussion of "traditional culture" and "cultural tradition". In addition, Dr. Wang Yao also put forward some thoughts on cultural identity, cultural confidence, and cultural creation. He pointed out that we should have both problem awareness and method awareness. Finally, Dr. Wang Yao gave excellent answers and guiding suggestions to the questions raised by the students, and the lecture ended successfully to warm applause.
