    Six Major Programs at the School of Foreign Languages

    1.English

    Study time: four years
    Degree conferred: Bachelor of Arts

    Professional Prospects: As the most important training base for advanced English talents in Shenzhen, we have continued to provide a large number of excellent foreign language professionals for the country, injecting robust momentum into the economic and social development of Shenzhen, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. As the world’s most common lingua franca, our English major produces graduates who are equipped with excellent cross-language and cross-cultural communication and critical thinking skills, international perspectives as well as substantial opportunities for employment, further study and development.

    Employment direction: translation and interpreting, administration, foreign affairs, foreign trade, business, etc. in government agencies, public institutions, and various types of enterprises; education industry (primary and secondary school teachers, education and scientific research personnel, etc.).

    Employment institutions: government agencies, public institutions, public education institutions (primary and middle schools) and educational organizations, scientific research institutes, various types of enterprises, etc.

    Training objectives: To train pragmatic, inter-disciplinary and innovative talents with comprehensive qualities and high ethical standards; to cultivate talents with positive, enterprising, and determined nature with solid English language skills and English professional knowledge; to train talents with an international vision and strong love for the Chinese nation who excel at cross-cultural communication and critical thinking.

    Knowledge objectives: to be proficient in English pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, discourse, rhetoric, etc.; to be familiar with sociolinguistic phenomena with special cultural connotations and basic theories and methods of language research; to be familiar with the development of English literature and important writers’ works; to be familiar with the social cultures of major English-speaking countries and the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western cultures.

    Ability training: to have solid skills in English listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation, etc.; to be proficient in English communication and expression; to have the ability to appreciate English literature and effectively carry out cross-cultural communication and cultural transmission; to have the ability of critical thinking and innovation; to be able to carry out interpersonal exchanges, self-adjustment and sustainable development.

    Main courses: Comprehensive English, English Listening, English Oral Communication, English Writing, Translation and Interpreting, British and American Literature, British Society and Culture, American Society and Culture, Introduction to Linguistics, etc.

    Training features:
    (1) Cultivation of inter-disciplinary talents of comprehensive capabilities and with international perspectives. We set up three distinctive experimental programs: (i) English Micro Major on International Journalism and Foreign Affairs, (ii) English-to-Chinese Advanced Interpreting Micro Major, and (iii) English-German, English-Spanish, Japanese-English bilingual programs, etc.;

    (2) Seeking broad International exchange and cooperation: we have developed customized programs with the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey in the United States, and the School of Humanities of the University of Western Australia in Australia, and a paid internship exchange program at Wesleyan College in the United States;

    (3) Establishing excellent internship bases: Xinhua International News Center, Foreign Affairs Office of Shenzhen Municipal People's government, Shenzhen Daily, Shenzhen International High-tech Achievement Trading Exhibition Center, Shenzhen University Education Group, Nanwai Education Group, etc. (all governmental and educational institutions with great social influence).

     
    2.English (Education)

    Study time: four years
    Degree conferred: Bachelor of Arts

    Professional Prospects: Through four years of specialized study and educational practice, English (normal) majors not only excel at cross-cultural communication and critical thinking, but also have sufficient education and teaching knowledge and skills, qualifying as English teachers in primary and secondary schools, class head teachers and school education management personnel. Both the employment rate and the rate of graduates opting for a teaching career in 2019 reached 96.25%. With the growing demand for teachers, thanks to the rapid development of the education industry in Shenzhen in recent years, more than 88% of English (normal) graduates are employed in Shenzhen, and more than 95% are employed in the broader Pearl River Delta. In addition, a large proportion of graduates have the opportunity to study in world-renowned universities at home and abroad, including Harvard University, University College London, and the University of Edinburgh.

    Employment direction: education industry (primary and secondary school teachers, education and scientific research personnel, etc.), government agencies, public institutions and interpreting, administration, foreign affairs, foreign trade, business, etc. for various types of enterprises.

    Training objectives: To cultivate teachers with good professional qualities and high ethical professional standards; to train teachers with a solid foundation of English language and literature, good humanistic qualities and cross-cultural communication skills, and a proficient mastery of basic theories and methods of education and teaching. To train inter-disciplinary talents of professional and innovative competence who can adapt to the reform and development of basic education with their teaching and research capabilities.

    Knowledge objectives: To master knowledge of English language, literature, and culture, understand the basic theories and methods of language research; to be familiar with the development of English literature and the works of important writers; to be familiar with the social culture of major English-speaking countries and the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western cultures; to understand national education policies and regulations, master the basic theories, knowledge and skills of educational disciplines and subject teaching; to understand the frontier educational theories of teachers at home and abroad and the latest developments in basic education reform in the new era.

    Ability training: To be proficient in English listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation, etc.; to be proficient in the use of English for communication and expression; to have the ability to carry out cross-cultural communication and cultural transmission; to be capable of critical thinking and innovation, self-adjustment and sustainable development; to possess the ability of school and class management and psychological counseling targeting primary and middle school students, with teaching and research capabilities centered on reflection and exploration, and the potential for innovation in the field of basic education.

    Main courses: Comprehensive English, English listening and speaking, English writing, translation and interpreting, English and American literature, English and American society and culture, Introduction to linguistics, Pedagogy, Psychology, English teaching methods, English curriculum standards and research on teaching materials, middle and primary school English micro Class teaching, information teaching, etc.

    Training features:
    (1) Emphasizing practical teaching under the guidance of OBE: In addition to a large number of practical courses, teachers are also required to incorporate a number of practical elements into theoretical courses;

    (2) Training versatile and distinctive multi-linguals; we encourage students to choose English-German, English-Spanish and other experimental programs to cultivate distinctive professionals and lay a solid foundation for dramatization and bilingual teaching in basic education;

    3.Japanese
    Study time: four years
    Degree conferred: Bachelor of Arts

    Professional Prospects: The School of Foreign Languages is the most important training base for foreign language talents in Shenzhen, and the Japanese major provides the only output in the area of inter-disciplinary talents on Japanese. Japan is our country’s most important trading partner in East Asia. With the development of Sino-Japanese economical, trade and cultural exchanges, an increasing number of Japanese enterprises, institutions and cultural agencies are entering China, which requires a large number of talents specializing in Japanese, and deepens the needs for such talents in domestic government agencies, enterprises, the tourism industry, educational and cultural institutions. At the same time, together with the “Japanese plus” concept, employment prospects are better when the Japanese major is combined with other majors through minor or double degree during undergraduate studies, and such students have the opportunity to excel in the fields of IT, trade, education, design, tourism, welfare, etc.

    Employment direction: translation, interpreting, commerce, education, banking, foreign affairs, culture and other industries.

    Employment institutions: Japanese major graduates are mainly active in various Japanese-funded enterprises, trading companies, banks, governmental departments, and cultural institutions in Shenzhen and Guangdong Province.

    Training objectives: to cultivate talents with comprehensive capabilities and high ethical standards; to train talents with Japanese listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills; to cultivate talents with sufficient knowledge of Japanese language, literature and culture; to train talents with social competitiveness, innovation and international vision.

    Knowledge objectives: To master the Japanese language and cultural knowledge, Japanese national conditions, Japanese literature and important works and writers, Japanese history and social characteristics, and Japanese etiquettes; to learn about the basic knowledge of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences to form an inter-disciplinary knowledge structure.

    Ability training: to have the ability to use the Japanese language, to be able to carry out literary appreciation, cross-cultural communication, critical thinking and innovation, to have research ability, independent learning ability and practical abilities.

    Main courses: Basic Japanese and Application, Intermediate Japanese and Application, Advanced Japanese, Listening, Conversation, Applied Writing, Interpreting, Translation, Overview of Japan, Japanese Literature and Culture, Japanese History, Business Japanese, Japanese Reading Comprehension, etc.

    Training features:
    (1) Focusing on the combination of practical skills and humanities. While cultivating students’ basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, we take advantage of the diversified research directions of teachers, combine teaching and research, and offer core courses such as “Introduction to Japanese Literature and Culture”, “History of Japan”, “History of Japanese Ideology”, etc. and innovative short courses to achieve a balance of skills and knowledge;

    (2) Emphasizing the cultivation of inter-disciplinary talents with international perspectives; we have set up Japanese-English bilingual classes, and formulated a customized training plan; we have replaced university English courses with professional courses based on English skills, supplemented by English literature and culture courses, so that when students learn new languages, they can also improve their English proficiency, build a vision of Eastern and Western culture, and cultivate true multilingual talents;

    (3) Focusing on the cultivation of students' academic thinking.We have built a "Research Center on East Asia", promoting teaching by research. We have vigorously built up collections of books and documents, and regularly hold reading clubs and lectures, to establish basic academic thinking and raise research awareness;

    (4) Exploring multiple international communication channels. We have established exchange partnerships with Osaka University, Meiji University, Ritsumeikan University, Oita University, Kanagawa University, Osaka City University, Kumamoto Gakuen University and many other well-known Japanese universities; we have also established the “2+2” model of dual degree on dual campuses with Sapporo University. We have established a training base for postgraduate entrance examination in Kyushu Foreign Language School in Japan to provide training and channels for students to apply for postgraduate studies in Japan.
     
    4.French
    Study time: four years
    Degree conferred: Bachelor of Arts

    Professional prospects: the French major of the School of Foreign Languages is the most important French talent training base in Shenzhen. The Pearl River Delta region has close exchanges with French-speaking countries and regions in terms of economy, trade, culture, science and technology. French graduates have good language communication skills, cross-cultural communication skills and critical thinking ability, and thus have broad employment prospects.

    Knowledge objectives: To master French phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, discourse, rhetoric and other aspects of the language; be familiar with the socio-linguistic phenomena with special cultural connotations, understand the basic theories and methods of language research; be familiar with the development of the history of French literature and important writers’ works; understand the basic theories and methodology of literary criticism; be familiar with the social culture of major French-speaking countries, and the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western cultures.

    Ability training: this major cultivates all-round French professionals with a rich knowledge of French language, literature and culture, solid French language abilities and high comprehensive humanistic standards, and can engage in related work in foreign affairs, foreign trade, translation, education, research, management and other foreign-related fields.

    Main courses: Comprehensive French, French Listening, Oral French, French Writing, French-to-Chinese Translation, French-Chinese Interpreting, French Reading, French Literature, French Society and Culture, etc.

    Training features:
    Closely relying on the professional development and practical advantages of the School of Foreign Languages, we should make full use of the resources, strengthen the discipline construction, adjust the Major setting, promote the construction of the faculties, and innovate the talent training mode.

    (1) Paying attention to integrating theory with practice. We adhere to the combination of teaching and practice. We emphasize both the basic and applied skills, and advocate for interdisciplinary and comprehensive teaching.

    (2) Reforming the teaching mode of specialized courses.We mainly focus on classroom teaching, supplemented by laboratory teaching and practice such as through the multimedia learning center, the satellite foreign language digital teaching video center, simultaneous interpreting and other laboratory teaching and practice. All French teachers have the experience of studying abroad, visiting and studying in France. The majority of professional teachers have doctoral degrees, and their research fields cover literature, linguistics, translation, culture, etc.

    (3) Paying attention to the combination of school teaching and social practice. We have signed internship agreements with Shenzhen Nanfeng social work service agency, Shenzhen Shekou overseas personnel service center, Nanshan International Exchange Center, and Shenzhen ROA Business Service Co., Ltd., so as to cultivate students’ creative thinking and comprehensive application abilities, and comprehensively improve students’ quality. We actively respond to the French-related Foreign affairs activities in Shenzhen by recommending students to participate in foreign affairs practice activities.

    (4) Vigorously promoting international exchanges. The French major has outstanding foreign exchange programs, and exchanges students with the Paris Institute of Arts and Culture Management (half a year), Aix-en-Provence Institute of Political Studies (half a year), La Rochelle University (one year), Quebec University (one year) and Montreal University (one year).

     
    5.German
    Study time: four years
    Degree conferred: Bachelor of Arts

    Professional prospects: The School of Foreign Languages of Shenzhen University was founded at the beginning of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Seizing the opportunity of the city’s development and making continuous progress, it has become an important foreign language talent training base in Shenzhen and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, making important contributions to the reform and opening up of the country and local governments. SZU’s German major is a new major established in Shenzhen to meet the needs of German talents in the new era. Graduates of the German major have a broad international vision, good Chinese and Western cultural heritage and humanistic qualities, solid comprehensive language abilities, and practice cross-cultural communication between China and Germany, which has broad development prospects. Graduates can go abroad for further study, and they can also put engage in employment and bring their knowledge into practice.

    Employment institutions: foreign affairs departments of the government, cultural institutions, educational units (primary and secondary schools), educational institutions, scientific research institutes, various enterprises, etc.

    Training objectives: to cultivate all-round German talents with a solid foundation of German language knowledge and strong cross-cultural communication abilities, a comprehensive understanding of the national conditions and social customs of German-speaking countries, good humanitistic understanding and international vision, proficient in the comprehensive application of German and English, and competence in secretarial, teaching, scientific research and other work in foreign affairs, international trade, science and technology, culture, education, tourism and other foreign-related fields.

    Knowledge objectives: to master German phonetics, vocabulary, syntax, discourse, rhetoric and other basic knowledge, understand the specific language phenomenon of German society and the connotation of Germanic culture behind it; understand the historical context of German literature development, and be familiar with the representative works of important writers and the basic theories and methods of Western Literary criticism; master the main characteristics of the cultural history of German-speaking countries and the main similarities and differences between Eastern and Western cultures.

    Ability training: to have solid basic skills in German listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, to be able to express oneself in German and English and engage in foreign exchange activities; to be able to read works in social, historical, literary and other fields of German-speaking countries; to have certain abilities of appreciation and evaluation; to have good abilities in cross-cultural communication and cultural communication. Graduates will also have the abilities of critical thinking and cultural innovation, good Chinese and Western humanistic qualities and sustainable development abilities.

    (2) Seeking international exchange and cooperation with distinctive features. The University of Jena, Bochum Ruhr University and Humboldt University of Applied Technology in Germany have carried out student exchange, exchange and vacation study tour programs. Students with excellent qualities and performance can apply for a German professional scholarship from the University.

The Spanish major of the School of Foreign Languages of Shenzhen University is the only Spanish Undergraduate Major in Shenzhen. It focuses on the economic construction and social development of the Shenzhen and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area, and cultivates high-level Spanish talents with good language abilities, adapting to the needs of the new era. With the increasingly close cooperation between the Pearl River Delta region and the Spanish-speaking world, multilingual talents who are familiar with Chinese, Spanish and English will have good employment prospects and broad development opportunities.

    Training objectives: to cultivate all-round Spanish professionals with a solid Spanish language foundation and rich social and cultural knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries, high English level, good humanistic standards, broad international vision and strong cross-cultural communication abilities, who will be able to engage not only in teaching, research, management, but also in foreign affairs, trade, culture, education, press and publication, tourism and other units or departments.

    Knowledge objectives: to master Spanish and English languages, knowledge of literature and culture; to understand the basic national conditions of Spanish- and English-speaking countries; to have a broad international vision and strong cross-cultural communication abilities; to understand China’s national conditions and relevant guidelines, policies and regulations; to master the basic methods of using modern information technology to obtain relevant information.

    Ability training: to have solid Spanish listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation and other language skills; have the ability of appreciating and appraising Spanish literature; to have the ability of effective cross-cultural communication and cultural transmission; to have the ability of critical thinking and innovation, independent learning and practice; to have certain research abilities and information technology application abilities.

    Main courses: Basic Spanish, Advanced Spanish, Spanish Viewing Listening and Speaking, Spanish Translation, Spanish Interpretation, Spanish Extensive Reading, Selected Reading of Spanish Newspapers and Magazines, Spanish Society and Culture, Latin American Societies and Cultures, Selected Reading of Spanish Literature, Business Spanish, Comprehensive English, etc.

    Training features:
    (1) Abiding by the training path of practical and compound talents.Starting from the requirements of the national development strategy of “the Belt and Road Initiative” and the requirements of expanding Chinese culture, many English courses are included in the training scheme to highlight the training features of Spanish and English dual foreign language talents.

    (2) Adhering to the cultivation of international talents. The School has established cooperative relations with many universities in Spanish-speaking countries, including Madrid Autonomous University, Barcelona Autonomous University, University of Alicante, Seville University, King Juan Carlos University, Miguel Hernandez de Elche University and the Peruvian University of Piura, etc.; it has sponsored students to go abroad to participate in international summer programs every year to promote the international cooperation and exchange of professional education.
