In 2021, the SFL of SZU will continue to recruit outstanding fresh undergraduates to pursue postgraduate studies by exempting them from the National Admission Examination for Postgraduate Studies (referred to as "exempted postgraduates"). The total number of students will be 25 (including no more than 15 students in English, 5 students in Japanese and 5 students in Spanish), and the degree type will be master for academic research. Programs
The first-level discipline of Foreign Language and Literature consists of four second-level master programs: English Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Applied Linguistics, Japanese Language and Literature, and Spanish Language and Literature.
English Language and Literature
This program consists of two research directions: English Literature and Culture, and Translation Studies. English Literature and Culture guides students to read English literary and cultural works extensively, to understand the sources of English literature, to learn the basic theories of English literature and culture, and to develop critical thinking, close reading of texts and intercultural communication skills. Translation Studies guides students to study both Chinese and Western translation theories, understand Chinese and Western translation traditions, and cultivate the ability to describe, explain and criticize translation phenomena in order to form diversified and practical concepts of translation. This study is also supplemented by practical training in interpretation and translation, so that students have the ability to engage in translation practice.
Foreign and Applied Linguistics
This program consists of Linguistics and Language Teaching. The goal is to enable students to master the basic theories, important schools and major research methods of modern and applied linguistics in a systematic manner, cultivate a rigorous and realistic spirit of scholarship and academic sensitivity, and equip students with the ability to conduct independent academic research and solve problems on the basis of basic linguistic theories and research methods.
Japanese Language and Literature
This program is divided into three fields: Japanese Literature, Japanese Language Education and East Asian Regional Studies. It aims to produce advanced Japanese language talents with solid theoretical foundation and systematic professional knowledge, who are able to independently engage in academic research, Japanese language education, Sino-Japanese translation and other services for the development of the Greater Bay Area. The main courses offered include Modern Japanese Novels, Sino-Japanese Comparative Literature, Introduction to Japanese Linguistics, Japanese Sociolinguistics, Japanese Pedagogy, SLA Studies, East Asian Intellectual History, East Asian Historical and Social Studies, and Sino-Japanese Regional Studies. In addition, students who have been admitted to the master's program in Japanese have the opportunity to study abroad at Japanese universities during their studies.
Spanish Language and Literature
This program includes two research directions: Spanish Language and Literature, and Spanish-speaking Nations and Cultures, with an emphasis on improving students' comprehensive quality of Spanish and comprehensively cultivating their research interests and academic research abilities. Spanish Language and Literature offers Spanish linguistics, the literature of Spanish-speaking countries and the theories and practices of Spanish-Chinese translation as its research and study contents, and focuses on cultivating students' solid foundation in Spanish language and academic research abilities. Spanish-speaking Nations and Cultures offers Latin American economy, the history and culture of Spanish-speaking countries and the cross-cultural studies between Spanish-speaking countries and China as its main research and study contents, and focuses on cultivating versatile talents with rich knowledge of national conditions and cultures of Spanish-speaking countries and the ability of cross-cultural research and application.
Preferential policies for Exempted Postgraduates
(i) Tuition fees
According to the national policy, the tuition for full-time postgraduate students who are admitted to Shenzhen University is 8,000 RMB per year; for that of part-time postgraduate students, please refer to the Regulations for Enrolment of Postgraduate Students of Shenzhen University in 2021.
(ii) Scholarships and grants
Relying on the advantage of regional economic development, Shenzhen University has further increased its investment in education, attracts quality students and encourages students to concentrate on their studies by improving financial support.
(1) The National Scholarship is 8,000 RMB per year; the Special Scholarship for New Students is 15,000 RMB.
(2) Apart from the National Scholarship, the National Grant and the Academic Scholarship, there is the Outstanding Postgraduate Student Cadres Scholarship, the amount of which has been increased.
(3) In order to carry out the spirit of "Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation for All", to encourage and guide university students to participate in innovative activities such as scientific research, technological development and social practice, to cultivate students' spirit of innovation and cooperation by advocating science and challenge, and to make full use of the University's advantages in resources such as talents and scientific research platforms to create a group of innovative and entrepreneurial talents, Shenzhen University has established a Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund. Postgraduate students can apply for postgraduate innovation projects (general projects) and significant projects.
(4) There are a number of social (enterprise) scholarships such as the "Good Day Scholarship" and the "Tencent Founder Innovation Scholarship".
(5) The University has increased the number of assistant positions for postgraduate students and improved their remuneration.
(6) The University encourages postgraduate students to obtain financial support by participating in high-level research projects either established by the University to support graduate students' research and innovation or started up by their supervisors who provide research subsidies, etc.
(7) Some schools have set up scholarships ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 RMB for outstanding exempted postgraduates.
According to the university's scholarship policy, the annual scholarship for full-time non-directed postgraduate students are not less than 8,000 RMB, and those with outstanding performance are not less than 60,000 RMB. Those, together with the National Grant and the social (enterprise) scholarships, a graduate student can be awarded more than 100,000 RMB per year.

Application and assessment procedures
According to the “Notice on Further Improving the Measures for Recommending Outstanding Fresh Undergraduates for Exam-Exempted Postgraduate Studies (No. 5 [2014] of Teaching Department) issued by the General Office of the Ministry of Education, the basic procedures in 2021 for the University to accept the exempted postgraduates are as follows.
(1) Candidates shall apply online. After the fresh undergraduates have obtained the qualification for exam exemption and have determined the programs they want to apply for, those who are interested in applying for Shenzhen University should enter their pre-registration in the Pre-registration System of Exempted Postgraduates of Shenzhen University (http://ehall.szu.edu. cn/yz/ybm) so that the University can contact you in the future. SFL will give priority to students who register in the pre-registration system and invite them to a telephone interview before September 28th. From September 28th to October 25th, candidates can apply in the Service System of Admission by Exemption (SSAE) (https://yz.chsi.com.cn/tm/) on China Postgraduate Admission Information website
(hereinafter referred to as CPAI).
(2) Shenzhen University sends out the interview notice. The schools of the University will send the interview notice to the applicants through SSAE on CGAIN. Candidates should confirm whether they agree to do the interview as soon as possible after receiving the notice.
(3) Candidates take the interview. The schools will notify the applicants who agree to take the interview of the specific arrangements for the interview (which is usually at the end of September and October; the exact date is subject to the arrangement and notification of different schools).
Candidates are required to bring the following documents at the time of interview.
(i) The original copies of second-generation ID card and student card to check, photocopies of submission (a photocopy of both sides of the ID card, student information and registration status should be shown on the student card).
(ii)The original transcripts of previous years' study from the candidate’s university, with the official seal of the Academic Affairs Office of the candidate’s university.
(iii) Copies of other relevant materials (such as copies of transcripts for CET Band 4 and/or 6, other certificates of awards, representative academic papers, publications or any original outcomes, etc).
Meanwhile, candidates are required to go to the hospital designated by the University for a physical check.
(4) Admission. After the schools submit the list of those who have passed the interview and physical check to the Office of Postgraduate Admissions (OPA) of Shenzhen University, the OPA committee will examine and determine the list of candidates to be admitted. Those who are admitted will receive a letter of acceptance for admission and will be notified in time by the SSAE on CGAIN.
5) Review and public announcement by the Provincial Recruitment Office.
Notes
(1) Applicants must ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the supporting documents they submit. If the information submitted by the applicant is not authentic or accurate, the University will cancel the admission.
(2) The University will cancel the admission of the students who have not received the graduation certificate at the time of admission.
(3) Please refer to the Regulations for Enrolment of Postgraduate Students of Shenzhen University in 2021 for details about study and employment.
(4) Students who have been accepted as exempted postgraduates need not take the National Admission Examination for postgraduate students again. Otherwise, they will be disqualified from exempted admission.
