Trip to Dapeng Fortress on Chinese Culture Day
    writer:admin
School of Foreign Languages   Dec. 27, 2018

Winter Solstice, one of the traditional Chinese holidays, falls on December 22 this year. In order to promote exchanges between teachers and students, between different majors and from different cultural backgrounds, the School of Foreign Languages decided to hold “Chinese Culture Day” on this very special day.

Both international and domestic teachers from the School of Foreign Languages, postgraduates who major in Foreign Languages and Literature, as well as international students majoring in TESOC took part in this event. This multicultural group went to Dapeng Fortress on a discovery journey of Chinese culture.

    Departure Time
At 9 am, participants set off from Shenzhen University on time and headed east to Dapeng Fortress.

Built in the 27th year of Hongwu period under the reign of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang (AD 1394), Dapeng Fortress covers an area of about 110,000 square meters. With a history of defense against foreign aggression for more than 600 years, it was the key military fortress on the coast of southern China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There were also a number of outstanding national heroes, such as Lai Enjue, Liu Qilong, and Liu Heizi. This is the reason why Shenzhen is also known as “Pengcheng” (Roc City).

    Rock City
Walking on the stone road and touching the ancient city wall, everyone couldn't help slowing down, as if they were feeling the changes over the years and looking for the footprints of history.
    Lunch Time
At lunch, everyone tasted the traditional and authentic food of the Roc City, such as Dried Spicy Duck and Sliced Cold Chicken. The taste of the city's long history burst out on the tip of everyone’s tongue.

    Cha Kueh Workshop
Similar to Glutinous Rice Dumplings, Cha Kueh (Steamed Tea Cake), is one of the traditional Hakka snacks in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Nowadays, the ancient town attracts many foreign residents, bringing fresh and diverse modern culture to it. The quaint tradition perfectly blends with modern civilization, showing the openness and inclusiveness of Chinese traditional culture. This is also true for the big family of the School of Foreign Languages. We warmly welcome teachers and students from different countries and cultures. Here, the sparks of our ideas fly in friendly exchanges, and our cultures merge in sincere understandings.

In the afternoon, everyone went to Jiaochangwei Beach, to play with sea water, shop at small stores on the shore, and catch beautiful moments with their cameras in front of a beautiful beach.

    What a leisurely afternoon!

    Bid Farewell
Before dusk, everyone said goodbye to the Fortress and beach, and returned to Shenzhen University as the sun was going down.

This cultural exchange event left an unforgettable and a deep impression on teachers and students of the School. Followings are the respective comments of two international students.

    Anna:
Many thanks to Department of Foreign Languages of Shenzhen University and all the associate professors for sharing this amazing opportunity to explore more in the beautiful city of Shenzhen.

We enjoyed the trip a lot as it was my dream to visit Dapeng Fortress one day.
The trip was not just well organised but also rather informative, and all the participants were friendly and nice to us!
I was lucky to experience the beauty of the ancient architecture located by the seaside and of course a nice opportunity to try the local foods and to enjoy the fresh air coming from the sea together with our senior teachers and course-mates!

    Alexander:
Overall I enjoyed the trip, it left a lasting impression. I look forward to traveling like this again.

Anna and Alexander are international students from School of Foreign Languages, majoring in TESOC of 2018. TESOC is short for Teaching English to Speakers of Chinese. It provides a learning opportunity for foreign students, who aspire to become English teachers in China, to improve their professional and teaching skills. The first students in the program enrolled in September this year, attracting international students from Russia, the United States, Pakistan and Tanzania. With the acceleration of internationalization in the School of Foreign Languages, we welcome more international students from different countries and cultural backgrounds to join this big family. We will always welcome you warmly and look forward to meeting with outstanding Chinese students on campus.
