    About SZU
Shenzhen University is a public comprehensive university located in China’s southern outpost — Shenzhen. As a renowned special economic zone, Shenzhen has strong social and business ethos supporting and encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship. Shenzhen is adjacent to the two international metropolises – Hong Kong and Macao, with the fastest growing economy and playing a leading role in the course of China’s modernization and internationalization. Shenzhen now has a population of more than 1,000,000 foreigners, and thus the use of English becomes more and more common. The demand for native English teachers who have both an expertise in language learning and teaching and an in-depth understanding of Chinese culture is on the increase.

    Meet Our TESOC Students
    Aadi
“I’m Aadi and I’m from Pakistan. My major is TESOC and this is my first year at Shenzhen University. My experience at Shenda (SZU) has been quite enlightening till now. Besides just fostering academic knowledge, Shenzhen University has also offered me an enriching environment with its wide range of extracurricular activities and opportunities like seminars, volunteer services and cross-cultural nature of the campus. Shenzhen is a young city and it’s just over the border from Hong Kong in mainland China. Recently it has been added to the list of top 10 cities in the world and currently it’s at the second place. In addition to that, the ever-expanding diversity of courses and support from the faculty are important factors in making Shenzhen University an attractive destination for students. Various scholarships are also available for the deserving students.”

    Anna
“My name is Anna Pisareva. I am a graduate student here in Shenzhen University doing MA in TESOC program. I am originally from Russia and have been learning foreign languages since my childhood. China is a big country including multiple aspects of people’s lives and cultures, and this fascinates me a lot. Being currently based in Shenzhen this opens me tons of opportunities to practice my Chinese and English languages mostly, also, as a linguist and a future teacher, I am rather interested in people’s talks, ideas, thoughts and their lifespans. Shenzhen is a fast-developing modern megapolis containing a mix of cultures and nations altogether. Wherever you go, you will always find a nice place to visit. You can enjoy yourself with beautifully decorated parks here, you can go hiking as the city is surrounded by dozens of mountains, you can go to the seaside and spend a whole weekend there with your friends, you can meet new people attending varieties of Chinese and international events here, etc. I live in a student dormitory of Shenzhen University, and being an international student here, you will find it rather important and convenient that all the necessary items a student needs, you will definitely find it here. You can have a calming experience walking around the lakes and alleys, you can go swimming in a pool, you can cycle here as the campus is so big and safe to walk outside, okay basketball, attend a dance class, etc. If you are hungry, you can easily find good food and enjoy local Guangdong food or an international one. Also, I do really enjoy the climate here and the weather conditions are so nice. I hope while studying here in Shenzhen University I will make multiple friends with Chinese and international students, and also with our professors by attending lectures, seminars and university events.”

    Irene
“I am Irene from Tanzania. The campus grounds of SZU are tranquil, with beautiful gardens and meditative spots that mimic an oasis. The people are just as comforting. Everyone has been extremely helpful in nudging me towards the right direction whenever I got lost because the campus is also really big! There is a collection of international students from every corner of the world, each painting the campus with bright strokes of color. The Chinese Students are friendly and welcoming, and always take the time to genuinely ask about your culture. They are as eager to learn about new cultures as they are also eager to teach you some Chinese! It has been a wonderful experience thus far.”

    Alexander
“My name is Alexander Fomenko. I’m a master’s degree student here in SZU. Being here in China is very new and at times it can be bizarre in the most interesting and enjoyable ways. After coming here I’ve met a lot of different people from all over the world. The community here is incredible and I feel like it’s the most integral part of any academic experience - the people. Overall, I think coming here is a huge change of pace for me. I only wish that all the students could experience that.”
