Zhu Yanfen (international news and foreign affairs English minor program, Grade 2017, English major from School of Foreign Languages ):
“The intern in Shenzhen Daily adds a gorgeous color in my university life.
Everything was new to me when I first day went to the office in Shenzhen Daily. To start my intern, I had to probe into the content of the newspaper, record seniors’ experiences, and take notes on common phrases and collocations in journalism.”
(Zhu Yanfen’s intern notes)
“On January 12nd, two seniors and me participated in the activity of “Chinese and foreign residents celebrate the Spring Festival, celebrations held in Shekou Shenzhen”. Shekou residents of different nationalities got together in Shekou to share their own traditional food. During the interview of foreigners, I felt their enthusiasm and friendliness. It is really funny to feel the communication among diverse cultures and to broaden my perspective with a unique way to learn about the world.

“I really appreciated that our School and ShenDaily provided us such a good chance. Among one moth work, I had a life of newspaper office, be a “little journalist” and “little writer” in newspaper as well. Individuals always grow with many many attempts. I hope that I can keep going further in the life of studying.”
Zhong Hao((international news and foreign affairs English minor program,Grade 2017 , English major from School of Foreign Languages):
“Taking more look on CGTN, Economists, Times and even English Encyclopedia can we translate appropriately when facing complicated news”.
I have learned a lot about journalism as a semester’s courses of journalism finished. With a attitude of theory should come along with practice, I jointed Shenzhen Daily intern to work as a translator and editor.
I was charge for English Idioms which is to introduce usages of sources of English idioms. I had to offer 100 words for every period. It sounded easy, but every words had to be with sources and even idiom history with all references. Also, I participated in title translation(C-E) of Hongkong Commercial Daily. It looked like it was not a big deal. It was not easy, however, to make it concise and attractive as well because titles are the first thing or may the only thing that catches readers’eyes. I have read the whole passage and summarize main ideas, and then write my own opinions on this title translation. It was really satisfied to see my work published on next-day’s newspaper.”
(Zhong Hao’s work published on Shenzhen Daily)
“Before days of the Spring Festival, our four interns were provided the same treat as official staffs with a big bag of special purchases of the Spring Festival, which really surprised us.”
“We thought we had learned a lot about journalism, however when we went to real work we found it was only a corner of iceberg. We had to make more efforts on this field and taking more look on CGTN, Economists, Times and even English Encyclopedia can we translate appropriately when facing complicated news. The second semester of journalism courses has become more complicated, so I have to focus more on it. Here it is, I have to go to study now.”
Zheng Wen(((international news and foreign affairs English minor program, Grade 2017 , French major from School of Foreign Languages):
“The view outside the 21st floor is the widest world what we can see through this platform”
“My appreciation has to go for our professors who provide us an opportunity to have an intern in Shenzhen Daily. I have learned bout how journalism works and gotten more interests on journalism study during this internship. The first time I got touch with news translating and editing.
Compared with general translation, translating and editing includes picking the most important parts of a passage and translating it according to a certain format, which really challenges me.
Especially when translating and editing local news, I found it’s really difficult to give a native English expression while having a common Chinese news phrase. How to translate correctly, clearly and lively is still a lifetime learning for me. During spare time, I would translate headlines on Shenzhen Daily so as to familiar with English news expressions, and think more on choosing words instead of picking basic words.”
“The intern, a transition from school to society, gave me a chance to get along with others. The seniors of the journalism office are very nice which enables us to joining in the group as fast as possible. Also, they provided us chances to show our talents, and gave us instructions with patience when we were required to get better.
Zhu Chunyu (international news and foreign affairs English minor program,Grade 2017 , English major from School of Foreign Languages):
“It is only on paper that I know shallow, and I absolutely know how to do it”.
The internship provided me a chance to combine what I learned on courses with what it was really like in reality. For example, I found that it is unpractical to translate long Chinese words in English word by word, so I had to pick out major points and throw unwanted information. I also worked for writing, translating and editing and so on. All of these tasks were all new to me.”
(Zhu’s work published on Shenzhen Daily)
“As a member of department of internet new media, my daily routine was to copywriting. It sounded easy but I had to give 100% attention on it. While translating and editing news, I was required to make a research on lots of relevant sources to make the translated materials more accurate. Among these, the wording, structure, type of writing, references had to be more correct and detailed. Therefore, as a member of journalism, it is required to obtain professional proficiency anf ethnics, and to be responsible for passages and readers.
It is only on paper that I know shallow, and I absolutely know how to do it.
My thanks had to be given to our School and Shenzhen Daily who offered us a good internship. It enabled me to go out classrooms and to consider during practices.”
