The First Session of the Belt and Road "Charming North Africa" China-Tunisia International Cultural Exchange Ambassador Project

(SFL team: French teacher Mr. XIONG Wei(middle) and the four students )

In order to respond positively to General Secretary Xi Jinping's "Belt and Road" initiative and practice the spirit of "The key to sound relations between states lies in amity between the people, and the amity between the people lies in the linked hearts", Shenzhen University strives to carry out various cultural exchanges with countries along the Belt and Road and to broaden its students' international vision. From January 21 to January 30, 2019, Xiong Wei led four students selected from the School of Foreign Languages to participate in the first session of Belt and Road "Charming North Africa" China-Tunisia International Cultural Exchange Ambassador Project for 10 days.

Hosted by the Tunisian Monastir Municipal Government and Tunisian National Center for Computer Science Education and Training, and undertaken by Hongzhou Education in Beijing, this project is designed to strengthen exchanges in education and other fields in important areas along the "one belt and one road", to enhance understanding and friendship, and to experience multiculturalism.

(Communicating with local schools and participating in cultural training courses)

The delegation of the Chinese Ambassador for Cultural Exchange was invited to meet with officials of the Monastir municipal government, heads of the Departments of Culture and Education, and representatives of the academic community, as well as with local universities, colleges, and research institutions in Tunisia, such as the Monastir National Institute of Engineers, the Monastir Institute of Private Higher Engineering, the Monastir Institute of Oil and Gas, and the Institute of Higher Technology, etc.

The ambassadors of the delegation for cultural exchange listened to lectures on Tunisian history, geography, culture, architecture, language, food, and folklore in Monastir Education Center, and learned about its rich historical heritage, economic development, educational system, welfare system, social equality, people's lives, and employment issues. Chinese cultural exchange ambassadors and local students jointly organized large-scale cultural activities, presenting a splendid Chinese and Tunisian cultural feast through music, performance, drama, and other forms. Through various forms of exchange, the students of the two countries enhanced friendship and strengthened cultural identity.

(Visiting vocational and technical schools and getting together with local students)

During the ten days, students carried out language and culture learning exchange, visited the local famous historic and natural landscape, participated in local special cultural activities, deeply communicated with local college students, wandered around the local markets and streets, and made souvenirs in handicraft workshops. In Monastir, the students visited the castles of ancient Rome, Monastir University, the founding father’s cemetery of Burgiba, and various local vocational and technical schools. The four students talked with local students in English and French, introduced Chinese culture, and explored this mysterious country from the perspective of Tunisians.

By experiencing Tunisian culture and local customs in person, students had a deeper understanding of this open Islamic country. It was in this, the fourth holy city of Islam, that Kairouan stepped into the Great Mosque of Okbar and felt the solemnity of religion. The tower of the Agrabit reservoir reflects the wisdom of civilization and the tomb of Sahab quietly tells the long history of Islamic civilization.

(Carrying out various forms of cultural and recreational activities with local non-governmental organizations to deepen cultural identity)

In this project, four students of our school were awarded the title of “Ambassador for Cultural Exchange”, of which the student Deng Zhenyu majoring in French won the title “Ten Best Ambassadors”. The mayor of Monastir and the municipal government attended the award dinner and awarded the honorable "Belt and Road" cultural exchange ambassador certificate. On behalf of the city of Monastir, the mayor also pledged to continue to support China’s “Belt and Road” cultural exchange project while ensuring high-quality communication and providing absolute security.

(Visiting the city hall historic sites)

The successful conclusion of the first session of the Belt and Road "Charming North Africa" China-Tunisia International Cultural Exchange Ambassador Project, which lasted for ten days, left a deep impression on Chinese teachers and students. Meanwhile, the vigor and vitality showed by our teachers and students from the special zone not only made the red of youth in Shenzhen University blossom in Tunisia, but also impressed the Tunisian people as well as the teachers and students of the exchange group.
