Dutch Higher Education Delegation Visits Shenzhen University

In order to enhance friendship and academic and information cooperation between universities of the two countries, a delegation of 15 members from the Dutch higher education led by Erik Fledderus, Chief Executive Officer of the Dutch National Education Network, visited Shenzhen University on April 12, 2019. At 10 a.m., Xu Chen, Vice President of Shenzhen University, Zhang Xiaohong, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages (SFL), Qin Bin, Deputy Director of the Information Center, Wang Hongyan, Executive Director of the Netherlands Studies Center, Jeroen van de Weijer, Distinguished Professor of the School of Foreign Languages, and Li Yi, Executive Deputy Director of the Experimental Center of the School of Foreign Languages, met with the Dutch higher education delegation in the simultaneous interpretation conference room H5-305, Huiwen Building, Houhai campus.

After a round of introductions, the guests and the host watched the propaganda film of Shenzhen University, and Vice President Xu Chen delivered a speech to warmly welcome the delegation. He gave a historical overview of the development of Shenzhen University, starting from his visit to many universities in the Netherlands more than ten years ago, and introduced the general situation of Shenzhen University from the process of China's reform and opening up. He said that Shenzhen University had made a series of remarkable achievements and cultivated a large number of outstanding alumni in its short 36-year-old development process.

The Dutch higher education delegation had an in-depth exchange with our participants on the issues of information construction and the positive role of universities in the chain of production, education and research. Then Erik Fledderus, Chief Executive Officer of the Dutch National Education Network, introduced the scientific research and management structure of Dutch universities and said that four Dutch Universities had entered the Top 100 rankings released by Shanghai Jiaotong University. Despite the fact that Holland is a small-size country, it still attaches great importance to education and allocates advantageous resources to develop science and technology under the guidance of the state, forming a pattern of major research direction dominated by one university and coordinated development of other universities. The teachers of the Netherlands Studies Center of Shenzhen University also had a pleasant exchange with the guests during the meeting chaired by Dean Zhang Xiaohong.

Later, accompanied by Qin Bin, the higher education delegation visited the Xili campus of Shenzhen University, to gain knowledge about the optical transmission, cloud computing and storage resources of the Data Center, as well as learn about the achievements of the information construction of the smart campus of Shenzhen University. They also watched the demonstration of the five functions of “Safe Campus” explained by the staff of the Information Center. Jiang Dajun, deputy director of Xili Campus Office, joined the visit in spite of the rain.

At lunch time, the guests enjoyed the delicious food of Shenzhen University in Xili Student Restaurant. The Dutch higher education delegation expressed their thanks to Shenzhen University for its warm reception! They also praised the management and service of Shenzhen University and highly recognized the information construction level and information management concept of our university, with Jan-Willem Brock of Leiden University taking notes all the way. This exchange was of great benefit to both sides in terms of academic and information-based thinking and it provided a new platform for friendly exchanges between the two countries, which helps promote progress in academic research without borders and international communication.
