The Visit of the Consul General of Peru in Guangzhou

On the morning, Mr. Ivan Silva, Consul of the Consulate General of Peru in Guangzhou, and his party visited our university, holding talks with Peng Xiaogang, deputy director of the Department of International Exchange and Cooperation, and Zhang Xiaohong, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages. The two sides had in-depth talks on the establishment of an exchange and cooperation relationship between Shenzhen University and Peru's Piura University.

Deputy director Peng Xiaogang first extended a warm welcome to the visit of Consul Silva. Consul Silva said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Peru, bilateral relations have been developing steadily and healthily, characterized by frequent high level visits, expanding economic and trade cooperation, and increasing exchanges in culture, science and technology, education, tourism and other fields. In this context, he hoped that Shenzhen and Piura, Peru could become sister cities and their universities could establish academic exchanges and cooperative relations. Then he introduced the basic situation of Piura University, one of the best private universities in Peru, which is located in the Piura region of northern Peru and has maintained good cooperative relations with many universities in China. For example, it co-founded the Confucius Institute in cooperation with Capital Normal University, which became operational in 2009. At present, Chinese Spanish exchange students come here every year to learn Spanish and spread Chinese culture.

We also responded positively to the proposal of the Peruvian Consulate General. Deputy director Peng Xiaogang introduced the basic situation of our university to Consul Silva. Shenzhen University was established in 1983 with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China. Since its establishment, Shenzhen University, as a frontier university of reform and opening up, has developed rapidly especially reflected by its soaring domestic and international rankings. In addition, Shenzhen University has also actively carried out internationalization activities, constantly promoting departments and disciplines to participate in international cooperation, international education and international courses.

Dean Zhang Xiaohong briefed Consul Silva on the basic situation of the School of Foreign Languages. The School currently has five undergraduate majors, which are English (including English Language and Literature, and English Teacher Training), Japanese, French, Spanish and German. Among them, as approved by the Ministry of Education in 2018, Spanish was established as the school’s “Belt and Road” minor language programs. The Department of Spanish, with 9 full-time teachers available and of whom 5 have doctorate degrees, has established exchanges and cooperation with Spain’s Miguel Hernandez University, Alicante University and many other foreign universities. The cooperation between Shenzhen University and University of Piura can not only be limited to regular activities such as student exchange, teacher visits and credit recognition, but also to an international master’s degree programme modeled on the existing TESOC at the School of Foreign Languages, and to the establishment of a Peruvian research center to work together to open up regional country-specific research areas and outline a new vision for cultural and educational exchanges between China and Latin America.

The two sides agreed to establish a communication mechanism, initially draw up a cooperation agreement on the above cooperation willingness, and expressed their sincere expectation for the next visit and talks to come in May. At that time, the cooperation agreement will be further communicated and improved. Finally, deputy director Peng Xiaogang and Consul Silva exchanged gifts and took group photos.

After the meeting, Consul Silva also went to the Spanish class to give students a brief overview of the situation in Peru, and presented three Peruvian award-winning films, namely, Viejos Amigos, Chicama and Una Sombra al Frente, to the Spanish department for the appreciation of professional teachers and students and Spanish lovers throughout the school.
