Experience in Germany—Study Tour of Ruhr University Bochum (1)
    writer:admin
School of Foreign Languages   August, 2019

On Aug.3rd, we set off from Hong Kong Airport by plane, and officially started our study tour.

At 8 o'clock, Aug.4th, we finally arrived at Frankfurt Airport. The teachers of LSI (Language Institute) came to the airport to pick us up in person, which we took to be a warm and intimate gesture, and  a bus took us to RUB (Ruhr University Bochum).

Following a long journey, we arrived at the school at noon, and  were greeted with the "lunch bag" prepared by LSI that included juice, sandwiches, fruit, and energy bars.

    How considerate! Vielen Dank!
After lunch, we had a short rest and familiarized ourselves  with the surroundings of the dormitory.

This beautiful place is very quiet, and hence very suitable for studying.
Towards the evening, our lead Teacher, Chen Rong, took us on a tour of Bochum University. In the late afternoon and evening, Ruhr University is very quiet with few people walking on the road. This is quite different from Shenzhen University which is even crowded during the evening and holidays. They both have their own characteristics, one quiet and the other lively.

After the afternoon break, everyone was refreshed.
Dr. Waschik, dean of the Language Institute, invited us to dinner.
LSI prepared an elaborate spread, including pizza, pasta, salad, and so on.
We sat in the open-air restaurant, with our backs to the forest,
Now and then the bees danced as night drew near.
Thus, the first day in Germany slipped by.

Everyone got up early on the first day of the exchange program. Breakfast was served from7 o 'clock and, as expected, Bochum's breakfast buffet was varied, hearty and western. Accompanied by the aroma of coffee, milk, and bread, we started our first day in Bochum, fully motivated.

On Day 1 the theme of the course was Bochum. Our teacher, Frau Kleinhaus, was very humorous and lovely. We began by playing a mini-game "richtig oder falsch", that broke the ice and helped us to get to know her.

While the students initially knew little about Bochum, their understanding was soon enhanced by Frau Kleinhaus’ maps, explanations, and videosVarious grammar teaching exercises were also completed.

Finally, we ended the short but rewarding course with the well-known song "Bochum".
At noon we went to RUB’s Mensa (canteen) for lunch.
The canteens in foreign universities are somewhat different from those in China.
The advantage of domestic canteens is that they are cheap but fine.
By comparison, RUB's cafeteria is a little luxurious. For example, they serve food such as sticks and risotto. Of course, this means that the price is not very favorable.

After the first day of class, the teacher from Bochum took us to Bochum’s downtown for a tour around the city.
The zebra crossing in front of Grand Central station is not the usual black and white. It is like a red carpet connecting the station to the main city zone.
With Herr Ziegler’s leadership, and her thorough and patient explanation, we took an in-depth tour of the main urban areas of Bochum.

Kuhhirte is a shepherd boy who served the people of Bochum for 20 years. Every time he blew the horn, people would send their cattle and sheep out, he would shepherd the animals on their behalf. Later, people made this statue in memory of him.

For the local people, Dr. Carl Arnold Kortum is the Goethe of Bochum. She helped a lot of people in Bochum, and created many literature works, which were passed down from generation to generation.

This giant clock was made using the perfusion method, which shocked the world in the 1870s. The bell, which represented the highest level of German industry at the time, was sent to the Exhibition in Paris.

It is worth mentioning that many old buildings were severely damaged in the war. However, rather than tearing it down, an attempt was made to restore it, enabling this frozen artifact of history to be reborn.

After a two-hour tour we experienced unparalleled joy at the ice cream shop recommended by Herr Ziegler!
