Experience in Germany - Study Tour at Ruhr University Bochum (2)
    writer:admin
School of Foreign Languages   August, 2019

Herr Dr. Waschik, dean of the Language Institute at Ruhr University Bochum, personally designed the teaching program for us. The curriculum activities were rich and colorful, which fully reflected the symbiosis of language and culture, the interactivity of teaching and learning, and the integration of classroom and society.

The class on August 6th was led by Frau Dr. Pieper and the theme was "daily life and living environment". As an old China hand, Dr. Pieper not only speaks Chinese very well, but he is also familiar with various social phenomena in China, which made our classes run more smoothly.

In class, Dr. Pieper guided us to combine the urban conditions of our home town with those of Germany, and to make an in-depth exploration of the daily life and residences of German people.

She also prepared a wealth of video materials and role-playing activities, which made us feel as if we were there on the spot experiencing the daily life and residences of German people.

(Typisch Deutsch Tips: When Germans buy houses, they pay special attention to private space, bright colors, and wooden structures!)

Teacher Rose, who has lived in Germany for many years and has rich teaching experience, was in charge of the course on August 7th. The theme was "methods of Learning German". Through the mini game of guessing right and wrong, we learned that Rose has had a multi-lingual and rich multi-country travel experience. Her class focused on teamwork and strengthened our skills in dialogue, discussion, and communication through a large number of group tasks.

On August 8th, we had class with Frau Dr. Pieper again. The theme this time was "Deutschland Regional" (Regional characteristics of Germany). She guided us to use less Chinese and more German to communicate and state our views in our discussions, so that our ability to express ourselves in German could be improved.

On August 9th it was Frau Kleinhaus’ class, and the theme was "Einkaufen und Essen" (shopping and food). Frau Kleinhaus also planned a Grill Abend (barbecue night) for us on this theme. The most interesting part was the "Party" design. Under the guidance of Frau Kleinhaus, we started the detailed planning two weeks before the party. Each group made a distinctive party schedule. At the same time, we also realized that the Germans are very strict but they also love to play.

At LSI, fun and experience are strongly emphasized in the course. To give us a better understanding of the local food and shopping culture, Frau Kleinhaus led us to the Friday market in downtown Bochum to shop for the ingredients in the evening. Before departing for the market, Frau Kleinhaus used a food model to teach us the necessary words for the ingredients, acting as a shop assistant to simulate live shopping with us.

She vividly recreated various shopping scenes, which brought us fun and at the same time, added to our confidence when facing unfamiliar situations.

Finally we came to the market. It was a hullabaloo, full of activity. Each group took its own menu and executed their shopping tasks in an orderly manner: some were buying sausages, some were buying vegetables, some bread, etc.

We actively spoke with the shop assistants, communicating with them and recording all kinds of unfamiliar German featured ingredients. Such vivid and practical classes, in which we could acquire knowledge and also experience German culture, impressed us deeply.

In addition to classroom learning, the university also arranged many interesting after-school activities for us.

    1. Visiting the German Mining Museum(Deutsches Bergbau Museum)

As we all know, the prosperity of Germany's Ruhr area is inseparable from the once rich coal resources and advanced mining industry. In order to understand this history in depth, we visited the German Mining Museum. Taking an elevator to the cold underground mine, we got a close look at the advanced technology at the time, and a feel for the hard work of the German working people.

    2. Cranger Kirmes Experiencing German leisure (Cranger Kirmes Theme Park)

Cranger Kirmes Theme park can be regarded as a microcosm of German people's outdoor recreation. Here we can see many residents, men and women, young and old, who come here in their spare time to play, shop, drink, and chat in a very comfortable environment.

    3. Grill Abend Barbecue Night

After eating German food for a few days, we finally got a chance to cook it ourselves! Under the guidance of Frau Kleinhaus, we bought the ingredients and learned to make German potato salad, cabbage salad, and grilled sausage, which each have a unique flavor!

After a week of study, we went on a special cultural excursion led by Frau Karl: on August  11th, we headed to Cologne!

(Typisch Deutsch Tips: The highway in Germany is very flat, and 67% of highways have no speed limit. Therefore, don't be surprised if a car speeds past you on the highway.)

First stop in Cologne: The Chocolate Museum (Schokoladen Museum)

Do you know how chocolate was originally created? Chocolate candies may be small, but they carry a lot of history and knowledge. At the Chocolate Museum, we learned about the entire history of chocolate in Europe and its unique automated technology.

After the visit, the staff gave us each a small bundle of chocolate as a gift. The sweet chocolate, blended with the quaint beauty of Cologne, made us more deeply impressed with the rigor and thoughtfulness of German people.

Cologne stop 2: The Visit to the Rhine River

As in most German cities, there are few tall buildings in Cologne. The most prominent building here is the Cologne Cathedral, which you can see no matter where you are on the river. The cathedral reflects the profound influence of religious culture on Germany. Boarding the touring boat, the river bank was clearly displayed in front of us. The sparkling river contrasted finely with the featured architecture of the city - extremely beautiful.

Cologne stop 3: The Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom)

The Cologne Cathedral is world-famous for its very long history, its status as the third tallest church in the world, as well as for its architectural style. It is known as the most perfect model of Gothic cathedrals. Entering the church, we were led by the docent and explored its ancient Catholic stories and architectural structures, which made us realize its artistic value as a world treasure today.

Cologne final stop: The Cologne Restaurant (Köln Restaurant)

Stepping out of the grand atmosphere of the ancient Catholic Church, we came to a local authentic restaurant in cologne.

German sausages, pork knuckles, grilled steaks and potato salad were all on the table. These are all classic German dishes. They were plentiful and hearty, which is the best comfort for tired travelers.

We ended the perfect day with a pleasant dinner.
Whether you start with language or anything else,
When you get to know Germany,
You will fall in love with it.
