Review: The 2019 Summer Study Tour in Association with the Autonomous University of Madrid was a Great Success
    writer:admin
School of Foreign Languages   August, 2019

This summer, the School’s Spanish majors organized a 17 day study tour of Spain in cooperation with the Autonomous University of Madrid.  Today, Xiaoxi will describe the students’ experience.

(A group photo of the tour participants at airport)

    1.About Class
Each working day students would take the bus to the Autonomous University of Madrid. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. they participated in the summer language courses offered by the university. Under the guidance of experienced teachers from the university, the students interacted in Spanish, and their linguistic abilities improved constantly.
I like the teacher's teaching style and content very much...Each lesson gave me a great sense of achievement and expanded my vocabulary for describing Spanish society and culture. We discussed social problems together in class and learned a lot of native expressions such as “explicaciones auténticas”.
——Alfonsa(a member of the study tour group)

María is a cute teacher with a great sense of humour. Her class was vivid and entertaining. She can explain all the new vocabularies very clearly and teaches at the appropriate pace. Not only did she impart a great deal of knowledge to us, she did so by keeping the students active and sustaining a stimulating class atmosphere.
——Adriana(a member of the study tour group)

    2.The Accommodation
For the duration of the trip, the students lived in the dormitory which is equipped with all the necessary facilities, such as a canteen, a laundry room, a library and so on. The dormitory was simple and clean, and the canteen provided authentic Spanish food every day. The delicious food was perfect for sating  the students' appetites, and won their unanimous praise.

    3.Sightseeing Activities
In addition to classroom activities, the study tour also engaged in a number of sightseeing activities. This helped students to supplement the knowledge acquired in class with first-hand experience of Spain’s rich and diverse cultural landscapes. In what follows, some of the sightseeing activities will be described.

    (1)Toledo
Toledo is an ancient city in Spain that has been occupied and ruled by several different peoples.  These different nationalities and cultures have left a precious artistic and historical heritage, the integration of which in a single city makes Toledo a microcosm of the broader Spanish nationality. It is famous, not simply for its well-preserved ancient buildings, that come in a variety of styles, but also its colorful culture and unique handicrafts. These include paintings inlaid with gold, as well as weapons, such as knives and swords. .

The students strolled along the unique stone roads of Toledo, and appreciated the charm of the city under the guidance of the teachers.

    (2)Segovia
Segovia is an ancient and exquisite town, which is well-known for its 2000-year-old Roman aqueduct and fragrant roasted suckling pig. The ancient city is listed as a world heritage site along with the aqueduct.

Passing through the towering aqueduct, students walked freely in this small city. Although the temperature was slightly lower and accompanied by light rain on the day of the tour, everyone was in high spirits.

    (3) Visiting an environmental company called Urbaser
Urbaser, headquartered in Spain, is the world's leading comprehensive service provider for industry-based environmental protection. Its business is widely distributed in more than 20 countries around the world, including Europe, South America, North America, Asia, and Africa. It has a strong industrial status and brand influence.

Students visited a waste treatment plant of Urbaser located in the outskirts of Spain and got an in-depth understanding of the way this company treats municipal waste. The company has a mature garbage classification and treatment system, and uses recycled garbage to produce new products, which has good economic and environmental benefits.

After the visit, the students not only marveled at the advanced garbage disposal methods of foreign enterprises, but also acquired a deep sense of the necessity and urgency of implementing garbage classification in China.

    (4) Flamenco experience class
Flamenco, one of the most influential popular dances in the world today, is a combination of gypsy culture and Spanish Andalusian folk culture. The traditional flamenco dance is usually performed by dancers with an improvised singing and guitar accompaniment. With its inner strength embodied by beautiful dance steps and movements, Flamenco attracts people from all over the world.

Under the leadership of the teacher, students learned a short, simple dance to experience flamenco's unique style. After that, students watched a complete flamenco and were affected deeply by its powerful dance steps. At the end of the performance, students gave warm applause to the performers.

    4.Closing
17 days may seem like a long time, but in fact it passed in the blink of an eye. When the day of the return journey approached, all students showed a deep reluctance to part with this charming country. On the night before leaving, students packed their bags. These were full, not only of trophies from shopping, but also profound feelings. Moreover, their mobile phone’s stored not simply photos of  beautiful scenery photos, but also unforgettable experiences and memories.

For all the members of the study tour, this was their first trip to Spain. Whatever the challenge—no matter whether this was the inhibition of shyness, the danger of losing property to thieves, or other challenges encountered in the learning process—every time they had the courage to speak up. Every problem or challenge was a learning experience for which they ultimately felt grateful.

For these students who study Spanish, language was used to  break the boundaries of communication, to heighten their appreciation of Spain’s charms, and to acquire a deeper understanding of Spain’s cultural background.

We believe each student has acquired insight and personal growth from the trip, and is now better able to meet life’s challenges, making the experience extremely worthwhile. .

With this sincere and excellent literary article, 'Let's retain our wonderful memories of this tour!'
